The billiards tournament for the Nemiroff Cup with a cash prize of $10,000 USD was held in the Moscow club Kino in Russia on March 15, 2003. In the final, in an intense struggle, Yakov Gribov, Nemiroff's president, yielded to Alexander Lobkov, the first deputy commercial director of First Channel.
On the way to the final round, both Alexander Lobkov and Yakov Gribov had to overcome strong contenders who were correctly considered favorites prior to the start of the tournament. Alexander won against Andrei Makarevich, the lead singer of the rock group Mashina Vremeni, who beat Leonid Yarmolnik before that. As for Yakov Gribov, he crossed cues in the first round with a very strong player, Mark Rudinshtein, and with Mikhail Shirvindt in the second round. The final ended with a score of 3:1. Pavel Goussev, the editor-in-chief of "Moskovsky Komsomolets", and Boris Khmelnitsky, the actor who played the role of Robin Hood in the film "The Ballad of the valiant knight Aivengo", competed in the match for third place. Demonstrating the best qualities of his strong will, Kmelnitsky, who was down 0:2, won with a score of 3:2. Among all of the stars, we cannot forget Leonid Yakubovich, who had lost in the quarter final against Valery Syutkin, who had lost in the second round.
Overall, of the twenty players who took part in the tournament, not one showed weakness or a lack of training. Each one could have made it to the final round, each had equal chances, but in the end, those with the strongest nerves, and whom Fortune favoured that evening celebrated victory. As for the prize money, the cash was donated to charitable purposes.
